Are you considering resodding your lawn? Fortunately, Central Florida has a mild climate, so resodding can be done almost any time! The recommended and best times however, are October, February, and March. Here at Mansfield, we suggest resodding in the fall time. Avoiding extreme high and low temperatures will help you resod more successfully. During fall, there are less threats from insects and disease, and sod is generally beginning its dormancy period. This means less watering, and less mowing for you. By spring time, it will be more established, and be able to withstand the pressure from weeds and pests.
The first step to ressoding is to have a soil sample done. This will allow you to adjust your nutrition levels prior to laying new sod. When you choose Mansfield for your sod needs, we take care of this for you. You’ll also want to kill weeds at least a month prior to laying sod. There are quite a few different methods. You can also choose to lay sod on top of the old yard that has been cut extremely low, but this can make establishment take longer. Since weeds are a consistent problem in Florida due to the lack of cold winters, they will always grow back. The best prevention is regularly mowing your lawn and maintaining its health.
If you do not already have a sprinkler system installed, doing so before sodding your lawn is the perfect timing. Once the sod is laid, you’ll want to water it immediately, and continue to water every day for about two weeks, depending on the sod type. At Mansfield, we know sod is an investment in your home, and we always leave you with proper care instructions. Be careful when you mow new sod. If it is not rooted yet, the mower could suck up the edges, and ruin your beautiful new yard! We recommend waiting a few weeks before mowing. Once it is well established, you can mow it to the length you’d like.
